Ken Ham vs “The Secularist”

Ken Ham, (CEO of Answers in Genesis) has taken offence to an internet meme that I created, questioning his oft-repeated claim that the Ark he is building in Kentucky will be the largest timber-framed building in the world.

The following is a response to Ken Ham’s Blog post; ( More False Accusations Against the Ark Refuted – Ken Ham 26th January, 2016)

A number of secularists (that would be me) have accused AiG of lying about the size of the Ark we are building south of Cincinnati, stating that it is not the largest wooden structure, as they (wrongly) think we are claiming. The research conducted by the leading timber frame mill in America, Colorado Timberframe, has shown that the Ark is the largest timber-frame construction—not the largest wooden structure.” – Ken Ham

“You see, we have never stated that it will be the world’s largest wooden structure.”

Now this is an example of obfuscation at it’s finest. A man who believes the earth is 6000 years old and that dinosaurs and humans co-existed together, is trying to explain why a timber framed building in Oregon isn’t really a timber-framed building at all, because the hangar in Oregon doesn’t use mortise and tenon joints held together with wooden pegs.

This is semantic nonsense, as any builder or carpenter will tell you. The media have been quite happy to spread the ridiculous notion that this ark is the largest timber framed structure in the world, including the bank that is financing the project.

Traditional timber framing is the method of creating framed structures of heavy timber jointed together with various joints, commonly and originally with lap jointing, and then later pegged mortise and tenon joints.

There can be a lot of confusing terminology in the timber frame industry. In general, timber framing is the ancient method of crafting framed structures of heavy timber jointed together with pegged mortise and tenon joints.

“You see, we have never stated that it will be the world’s largest wooden structure.”

Maybe not from your own mouth Ken, but many of your supporters and media are helping to spread the lie.

  • From a recent Facebook post “Heritage Bank Directors, Staff and wives had the opportunity to tour the future Ark Encounter project in Williamstown yesterday. What an amazing project that will utterly transform the Greater Cincinnati region. Don’t miss the opportunity to visit the largest wooden structure in the world upon completion next year when it opens.”
  • “Answers in Genesis says the ark will the largest timber building in the USA” Media Report
  • “That means the actual ark ………when finished will be the largest wooden timber structure in the world” – USA Today
  • Ark Encounter is a theme park with a biblical twist, offering a full-size replica of Noah’s Ark, which is actually the largest wooden structure in the world.

“According to, “Timber framing is a distinctive style of building construction where heavy timbers are used to frame the structure instead of more slender dimensional lumber (for example, 2”x6”). One of the most defining elements of timber frame is its unique joints. Heavy timber is joined together via mortise and tenon then secured with wooden pegs.”

Wooden pegs……………..

Ken Ham had donors sponsor wooden pegs for the ark to the tune of $100 each. Here is a photo from the Ark Encounter “Groundbreaking ceremony”(which was held indoors), showing the wooden pegs being hammered into the round holes.ArkHammerPegCeremony_600.jpg

Here is a photo of part of the ark framing. Can you see the wooden pegs? No, neither can I.

As for the outrageous claim that this is in any way a “timber” building I present the following photos for your amusement….

    1. Well certainly the possibility of basic proto-lifeforms forming in an atmosphere of chemicals, proteins, amino acids etc is more believable than an invisible god speaking it into existence. Not to mention this omnipotent, omniscient god not knowing that humans were useless twats who couldn’t be trusted so he had to commit genocide.

And yes my ancestors were fish. The evidence is in my DNA and also in any human fetus embryonic stage.

And as much as I’d love to debate the finer points of abiogenesis with you, this post is actually about creationist lies and propaganda to sell $40 tickets to gullible fundies. Do you have any intelligent comment to make about the size of the ark or the method of construction?

      1. Your a fool if you think your related to fish. Mutations only alter (and many times detrimentally) genetic information that is already present—they don’t add new and novel information of the type that will change one kind of organism into another. All the time in the world is useless if there is no genetic mechanism to add what is needed for molecules-to-man evolution.

      2. Your attempts to prove Mr. Ham a liar and then your rebuttal show your lack of any depth in basic framing practices and then respectively the notion that any architect would sign off on a structure meant to be occupied by the public without a concrete foundation show that you are not indeed out to find truth but merely seeking to defame. Is a third parties misunderstanding of a process they are unfamiliar with any more of a “lie” than your own misconception of basic framing practices? I in no way doubt that your are an intelligent person but in this article you have only proven to convince someone of less understanding in this field than yourself.
